Conditioning, Layering and Combinations

Prepare your body to do more than just drill and isolate, but to dance and to layer basic belly dance movements. This workshop focuses on strengthening and isolating core muscles in preparation for layering movements, incorporating these layering drills into a combinations learned in the workshop. This workshop will work through combinations to gain a firmer grasp on the tribal and dark fusion genres of belly dance.

N.B. This is a *Masterclass*, limited to 20 places, of intermediate level or above. Not suitable for beginners.

Nouveau Noir

Tempest's area of specialty within the realm of Gothic Bellydance is "Nouveau Noir" – dance pieces that reflect the art and society of the early 1900's, pulling from silent films, vaudeville-Denishawn style, art nouveau, art deco, and the Oriental craze. Students will learn combinations that capture the elegant form and dramatic stylings from this time, while being taught in a format that will enable them to absorb them into their own personal choreographies.

Medieval Veil

A fusion piece inspired by Medieval court dance, and Kajira Djoumahna's ATS format . This is a group choreography with a 'finger' veil; rectangular large silk veils are best for this purpose, but other shapes and materials can be used. You will either be learning from scratch or building on your existing knowledge with a mixture of Kajira's & Heike's vocabulary and cominations, which will also be suitable for ATS. This is a general level and moderately paced class.

PLEASE BRING A LARGE VEIL - preferably rectangular and made from silk. Notes will be provided and a video can be taken for personal use only.

Decapitation, Dismemberment & Entrails: Evil little drill  combinations for Gothic Tribal Fusion Belly Dance

In this workshop, you will learn three wicked drill combinations  which focus on the different movement groups  important to  creating a strong and effective Gothic Belly Dance style. The first drill combination:  Decapitation, focuses on strengthening arm, head and shoulder movements. The second drill combination, Dismemberment, focuses on strengthening chest and torso movements. The third combination, Entrails, focuses on strengthening hip and leg movements.  At the end of this workshop, you will leave with three evil little drill combinations to use in your wicked little Gothic Belly Dance practice.

Expressive hands, arms and movement (with an emphasis on arms/hands/chest/belly)

Learn the secrets to Ariellah's expressive arms. Her workshop is devoted to strengthening and beautifying the belly dancer's arm, hand, belly and chest work, as well as fluidity ofmovement. Stretching, strengthening and drilling techniques will be used to build a repertoire of arm, hand and other movements.

Arms and hands are key to expressing one's music and love of dance. Students will be encouraged to stylize their own arm movements after drilling the basics. Some exercises are completed in groups to encourage use of arms and personal stylization of arms.

Vampire Combos

The Vampire possesses a mystical and eerie charisma. In the workshop, we will deal with the body movements of a vampire, because the main vocabulary of a vampire is its body in action paired with skilled mimic expression. How does a vampire move seductively and what must we focus on in the movements in order to portray a vampire at its most alluring?

Make-up for Gothic Bellydance

This workshop will include make up demonstrations to bring out your inner goth! We'll explore the many styles, from dark tribal fusion, dramatical theatrical, glitter goth & cyber goth! Make up will be provided but feel free to bring your own products if you wish.

Participants can be transformed within the class, ready for the club night.

Gothic Bellydance Combinations and Choreography

Learn Ariellah's unique style of belly dance by working with her on gothic belly dance combinations and choreography. The workshop includes a yoga infused warm up and repetitive drilling of gothic infused belly dance combinations. Students will learn a short choreography that infuses the combinations learned in the workshop.

Gothic Tribal Fusion Combos

Deva Matisa created the German Gothic Tribal Style – GGTS. She will demonstrate and explain her original combinations and steps during the workshop. The  mix is complex and unique.  The mood accompanying these movements ranges from magical to powerfully hypnotic and brutally archaic. However, the mood and steps blend to produce a stunning dance performance on stage.

Kali Arms

The Goddess Kali is famous for lots of arms amongst other things, so we start off by looking at arm shapes and moves, then experiment in pairs (or more) to give the illusion of extra arms, combined with her scary image.  This usually ends up being great fun. We have some improvisation and travelling moves too, including the 'severed head' step.  Notes on Kali and moves used will be provided.

Dancing on the Right Side of the Brain

Artists, writers, and other creative folk are said to be "right-brained" –they think in pictures, images, and random patterns. Engineers, accountants, and other number/fact people are said to be "left-brained"—meaning they think more mathematically, linearly, orderly. Learn to unleash your creative side and truly be "in the moment" with your dancing.

Often, a dancer can get too focused on a choreography, counting of steps, beats, and therefore become "left-brained" in their dancing –meaning they're being technical, and not dancing creatively, spontaneously, from the heart! In this unusual workshop, we're going to do some mental and physical exercises that will help you engage your right brain in your dancing!

Wind down with slow, serpentine and slinky movements to create drama and strength in your dance. From circles and eights to undulations and revolutions, we'll work on building strength and flexibility through silky, sensuous movement.

Body: Skin and Bones - The Skeleton of the Ascend Gothic Tribal Format

In this workshop you will learn the fundamentals of Gothic Tribal Fusion Bellydance as well as a complete and thorough introduction to Sashi's signature technique: The Ascend Gothic Tribal Format.

You will learn proper posture and technique as well as the movements that set the Ascend Format dancer apart from the crowd.

Proper posture includes positioning of the pelvis, utilization of the transverse abdominis and solar plexus, lifting of the shoulders and chest and placement of arms and hands.

Techniques we will review include posture as is related to execution of moves specific to Ascend Gothic Tribal Format including: Wishful Thinking, Cenobite, Nightcrawler, Dead Girl Drag and more.

Once these aspects are established we will learn how to combine the AGTF movements to create captivating combinations of your very own.

Dress prepared to dance. Bring a yoga mat and water.  Knowledge of basic Tribal Fusion and Gothic Bellydance is helpful.  All levels are welcome. Ascend Tribal Dance
